One of my earliest projects was working with the design team for the Brisbane Airport*. My role was small but significant. There were over 40 architects and designers involved in the Department of Housing and Construction project. My role as a contractor was to supply design ideas and do modelling work along with my business partner at the time (Robert Geddes).
My claim to fame was suggesting the arched vault that extended along the centre for the length of the main building like a spine. I worked tirelessly creating scale models out of styrofoam so various politicians and bureaucrats could be “walked through” the layouts and designs on the concrete floor of a now demolished building on Eagle Street.I also had input into the design of the control tower. A great experience for a young designer.
If it’s not fun then you are probably doing it wrong. Coming up with ideas can be hard sometimes but the best ones seem to arrive when I’m smiling.
